Jazz Music Styles
If you are here you probably already know that the term 'Jazz' covers a broad variety of different musical recordings. From the first believed jazz recording until now Jazz has had several different types of dominating genres in the little over century of existence.
To keep things simple, we classify styles in the following 11 jazz types below and list rough timeframes for each. Note that some artists and styles overlap. The years listed listed are reference to when the style was dominate, many styles are still popular and going strong today.
Early Jazz - Early 1900s to 1930s
Big Band & Swing Music - early 1930s until the late 1940s
Bebop - mid-1940s
Gypsy Jazz - late 1930s to mid 1940s
Cool Jazz - late 1940s and through the 1950s
Hard Bop - mid-1950s - mid 1960s
Modal Jazz - late 1950s through mid 1960s
Bossa Nova & Latin Jazz - mid 1960s
Free Jazz / Avant Garde - late 1950s and early 1960s
Fusion - late 1960s
Modern Jazz - 1990s
